Kathy Glavin's Chair Canning

  • Earlville Opera House 18 East Main Street Earlville, NY 13332 United States (map)

For the past 19 years, Kathy Glavin, from Norwich, has been creating all types of seat replacements including cane, rush, splint, binder cane, rawhide, Shaker tape and willow.

This passion started out by repairing a 1920's "Anybody Chair "...which was a simple chair in the corner of the dining room, to pull up to the table for the extra seating.   Kathy found a caning instructional book at the Old Forge Library, up in the Adirondacks, and followed the directions.  She was stunned and proud as punch with the results, and proceeded to find more chairs in need of a seat.  Kathy eventually bought the book from the library and proceeded to make all of the replacement types of seats.

Most of Kathy’s work is done in the summer in Old Forge.  There are many camps that have old chairs in need of repair.  Whenever she finds some free time, she works on chairs that she finds at antique shows, flea markets and garage sales.  Kathy gets a great amount of satisfaction bringing a chair back to life....especially those that bring back memories of times gone by, with the special people who were attached to them!
