<image:title>Virtual Quilt Show - Purity Spring Mystery Quilt</image:title>
<image:caption>By Nancy Townsend NFS, 70”x87” A girlfriend and I, both from Central N.Y., attended a Mystery Quilt Retreat at Purity Spring, Madison, N.H. It has red, white and blue stars with pinwheels. Its more traditional then contemporary. I was very fortunate to win a raffle basket at the Belknap Mills 2018 Quilt Show, which was free machine quilting by Diane Orlowski. She used a star machine quilting pattern that complements the quilt. It is my intention to donate this quilt to the New York State Chapter of Quilts of Valor, after hanging in my local guild's quilt show.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By Nancy Townsend NFS, 71”x96” Our daughter, Melissa, and her boyfriend, Zach have two cats. Merlin is gray and white and Aurthur is an orange tabby. I thought that this fabric would make a perfect traditional quilt for them. The pattern was "Easy Baby Quilt", free, from Craftsy.com. Ginny Canning, from New Hampshire, did the machine quilting.</image:caption>

The embroidery was well done and completed but the stamped quilting had not been started. The design is very detailed and took many, many nights to complete but with the embroidery completed, it was very pleasant as a winter project which I finished in January 2020. <image:caption>By Julia Graziano $1,800, 53”x25” Artist Statement: I came to fiber art through an appreciation of traditional quilting. The engagement of color, fabric, thread, pattern, and texture draws me into my studio each day. Each work begins by putting a line or shape on my design wall and letting it lead me to a place I have not yet thought of. Adding more elements allows me to see beyond and questions the connections. Challenges of construction and engineering can influence the emotion of the work. I hope to create a work where the elements and energy reside. Each work is made with commercial or hand dyed cottons, cotton thread, cotton and wool batting. I machine piece and machine quilt all my work. Each design is my own original design.</image:caption>

<image:title>Virtual Quilt Show - Quilt By Chloe (Coy) Breed, Pharsalia (1846-1912)</image:title>
<image:caption>Chloe was the daughter of Alanson and Mary Jane (Burdick) Coy. Though born into a Quaker home, she did not continue in this faith tradition following her wedding on November 18, 1866 in Pharsalia. Her husband, Merritt Breed, was a Civil War veteran of the 20th Regiment of the New York Cavalry. A housewife and mother, Chloe cared for the needs of the home and assisting her husband in his chores. In 1870, she lived in South Plymouth, but by 1880, she had returned relocated to Pharsalia where she is buried. Chloe and her husband had one son, Merritt E. Breed (1876-1960). He resided at home with his parents until their deaths where he continued to live until his passing; he did not marry and he fathered no children. This quilt was donated to the Chenango County Historical Society in 2009 by Chloe’s descendants. Originally on display at the Chenango County Historical Society before they closed due to Covid-19. <image:title>Virtual Quilt Show - Quilt by Eliza (Towsley) Tanner (1838 – 1921)</image:title>
<image:caption>“This quilt was made by Eliza Towsley Tanner in 1888. Her initials and this date are on the quilt. She was married to William Tanner who owned the mill in Smithville Flats. They are the grandparents of my grandmother. Their daughter, Lela, married Elmer Barnes and my grandfather was born in 1891 in Smithville Flats. This quilt has been a treasured family heirloom because of its great beauty and wonderful work. My Mother told stories of her artistic great grandmother Tanner and the beautiful wax fruit she made. The quilt was in the possession of my grandparents, and my grandmother gave it to me upon my graduation from SUNY Geneseo with a degree in History in 1976. These quilts are donated in memory of my grandparents, Warren Towsley and Eleanor Purdy Barnes and the many happy days I spent as a child on their farm on Route 222 between Smithville Flats and McDonough.” ~ Mary E. Grant-Snyder, Tanner Quilt Donor Lela Tanner wed Elmer Barnes in 1888, the same year the quilt is believed to be constructed. It is thought that Eliza may have made this as a wedding gift for the couple. Originally on display at the Chenango County Historical Society before they closed due to Covid-19. <image:title>Virtual Quilt Show - Quilt by Dr. Emma Louise (Randall) Whitman (1849 – 1920)</image:title>
<image:caption>A Norwich native, Emma graduated from the Norwich Academy before attending Vassar College. After studying with Dr. H.K. Bellows, she enrolled at the Women's Medical College of New York City, earning her Doctor of Medicine in 1878. She practiced medicine for a short while in her hometown before establishing a practice in Pontiac, Michigan. Emma was the first female physician in Chenango County, and she is believed to have been the first female physician in the state of Michigan as well. From 1880 to 1885, she served as Assistant Physician with the Eastern Michigan Asylum for the Insane. After marrying Walter W. Whitman (1845 -1918) in 1885, Emma moved to Little Falls, NY. She was a founding member and the first vice-president of the Little Falls Hospital Association. Emma lived in Little Falls until her passing, a result of fatal injuries she sustained in a pedestrian-motor vehicle accident. <image:title>Virtual Quilt Show - Quilt by Emma (Northrop) Smith (1863 - 1929)</image:title>
<image:caption>Born in Greene, Emma attended school in Brisben, where she later became a school teacher in District 18. She was also a reporter for the County Press. Emma was a charter member of the Independent Order of Good Templars, a secret temperance society formed in Utica circa 1850. She also served as a Sunday School teacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Emma was also very involved in the Women’s Relief Corps (WRC) that formed in 1883. The WRC’s mission was to “perpetuate the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic and its dead; their widow and orphans, and to maintain allegiance to the United States and promote patriotism and love of the country among the children.” Early members of the WRC were known to be enthusiastic quilters. They made quilts to give to the residents of WRC homes, including the Veterans’ Home in Oxford, and they held quilt raffles as fundraisers to support future projects. In 1892, Emma married Robert Smith, helping him run their farm as a summer getaway for young men from New York City. Emma became a trustee of District 18 school and served in this role for ten years. She was responsible for the revitalization of the district, painting the building and providing new furnishings. With the help of parents, hot lunches became available for the students. At Christmas, she provided a Christmas tree, along with gifts of candy, bananas, and oranges. At the end of the academic year, students were invited to a picnic at Emma’s home. This quilt traveled to California where it remained until Milly Auwater gifted it to the Greene Historical Society. Milly Auwater was a distant relative of Robert Smith, Emma’s husband. <image:caption>The daughter of Bill Taylor and Harriet Buckman, Paula spent her early years in Waterville, NY, before moving to Florida, where she lived for many years. For a time, she was a Walt Disney World Cast Member, though she spent most of her career working for a children’s mental health organization. After returning to Chenango County and settling in Norwich, Paula worked as a bookkeeper at the Northeast Classic Car Museum, and also assisted the Chenango County Historical Society in a similar capacity. Paula was a lover of arts and crafts, particularly crocheting, macramé, and making earrings. She was very skilled at sewing, both on machine and by hand, and was a regular patron of the former Sew Nice shop. Prior to her passing, Paula began preparing a book to include the over 500 quilt patterns she created in her lifetime, one of her proudest accomplishments. (The material has yet to be published.)
