EOH is pleased to present this Eclectic Singer-Songwriter - Dan Bern...

Bern’s…a folky troubadour with a rock-and roll heart and the all-too-rare skill of combining humor and intelligence. Sometimes he rocks with a Tom Petty-like heartland rumble, at others he delivers his lyrical musings with quiet acoustic backing.” — Baltimore Sun

Chris Hillman & Herb Pedersen
Friday, June 13, 2008 8pm

Country Rock Legends

Some may remember Hillman and Pedersen their days in the Desert Rose Band. However, Rock & Roll ‘Hall of Famer’ Chris Hillman is most often remembered for co-founding the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers. The two country rock pioneers explore the back road of American folk reflecting the depth and vitality of their skills. Hillman’s excellent guitar and mandolin stylings blend beautifully with the hillbilly flavors provided by Pedersen’s fiery banjo picking.

Gifted, Humorous Songstress

For some 20 years, Cheryl Wheeler remains one of the bright lights on the contemporary singer-songwriter scene. She looks like your mother-in-law, tells stories like a comedienne, and sings like an angel. She has written country-western chart toppers for Dan Seals and Suzy Boguss. Bette Midler, Juice Newton, and Linda Thompson have recorded Wheeler’s music. “Cheryl Wheeler has to be seen to be appreciated. Nothing you read and nothing you hear from her album prepares you for how good a performer she is.” The Music Box

Peter Rowan & Tony Rice

Peter Rowan & Tony Rice
Friday, July 18, 2008 8pm

Bluegrass Greats, with Farewell Drifters opening the show

If bluegrass has a guitar god, it’s Tony Rice, who has left a generation of aspiring guitarists trying to duplicate his clean, speedy, otherworldly sound. He spans the range of acoustic music, from straight-ahead bluegrass to jazz-influenced new acoustic music, to songwriter-oriented folk. He is perhaps the greatest innovator in acoustic flatpicked guitar since Clarence White. Peter Rowan, is a master of high lonesome who came of age in Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys. Rowan was one of the major cult bluegrass artists of the '80s, winning a devoted, international fan base through his independent records and constant touring.

Chris Smither
Friday, July 25, 2008 8pm

Acoustic Blues

“With a finger-picking guitar style that is equal parts Lightnin’ Hopkins and Django Reinhart, and a baritone voice borne of Jack Daniels and Leonard Cohen, Smither transcends categorization… Singer-songwriter Chris Smither is … always on the go between lapsed commitment and redemptive truce. On Drive You Home Again, his eighth album, Smither's stoic reflection and foxy wit are bathed in the flickering glow of passing headlights and neon bar signs. And Smither's roots are as blue as they come.” David Fricke, Rolling Stone

Odetta
Saturday, August 2, 2008 8pm

Folk, Blues, Gospel

Odetta is famous around the world. She began studying classical voice until her first exposure to folk songs. The music resonated with her soul and changed her life. “I learned about the United States and the people of the United States through this music, through the songs I sing.” Some songs are able to reach deep down inside the listener. She mines slave songs, work songs and spirituals for their emotion, reminiscence and transcendence. A sorceress, she evokes the power of her music to unite hearts and minds. Her performances are interspersed with stories and memories. Her career exploring folk, blues and gospel won her the NEA Medal of the Arts.

Rob Kolb directs Gilbert & Sullivan favorite! There's a reason The Pirates of Penzance has been performed virtually non-stop since 1879: it's so much darned fun. Let's face it, no matter how serious-minded we like to present ourselves as being, we can't help but giggle at a clever spoof.

Traditional Cajun & Creole

The Pine Leaf Boys have made a name for presenting their own inimitable brand of traditional Cajun and Creole music with youthful exuberance. Being described as, "... the link that connects the young and the old generations," and, "the best new, energetic, and fun Cajun band in a very long time," the Pine Leaf Boys play the old fashion dance hall standards while making a point to bring many of the more obscure songs of past masters into their repertoire and play them with gusto.

Jose Conde Y Ola Fresca
Saturday, October 4, 2008 8pm
Jose Conde Y Ola Fresca
Saturday, October 4, 2008 8pm

Cuban

Singer-songwriter Jose Conde is formulating a kind of Afro-Cuban music with an enlarged framework. His band Ola Fresca brings together son, guajira, guaracha with New Orleans funk, Nigerian Afrobeat, South American cumbia, James Brown rhythms, Haitian compas, Brazilian afoxe, New York City boogaloo and even jam-band stuff predicated on electric guitars as much as hand drums. That’s a lot of dance rhythm in one band, but there’s a folkish element too: Mr. Conde’s vocal understatement — unusual for the singer of a Latin dance band — and his emphasis on songs with characters, wordplay and some mild social ideas make this band as interesting as they are fun!

Ball in the House
Saturday, October 25, 2008 8pm
EOH at the Palace Theater, Hamilton

A Capella Pop/R& B

Ball in the House is a tour de force of vocal sound that defies all expectations. This five-man, pop/R and B "mouth band" hails from Boston, Massachusetts. Their unusual a cappella sound is due in large part to the vocal rhythm techniques of band member Jon J. He developed a complex series of vocal percussive beatbox sounds, becoming a "human drum machine" that continues to dumbfound audiences today. Ball in the House has toured from Boston to L.A., Singapore to New York, and everywhere in between!
