YOUTH SHOWCASE OF SINGER-SONGWRITERS
Sponsored by the Earlville Opera House
At the Palace Theater,
22 Utica St., Hamilton on
Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at 8pm
Grand Prize from Orbital Sound!
Songwriters must submit recordings of at least 2 original songs burned on CD in *.wav, *.mp3, or CD format. CD’s must arrive at the Earlville Opera House office by or before 5 PM on October 18, 2008. Cassette tapes are also acceptable.
Lyrics and instrumental music must be clearly audible on the CD, but sophisticated production quality is not important. Recordings should be submitted in an envelope with a submission form (see link to pdf form) that lists the song titles, the songwriter’s name(s), and the names and roles of any other performers, along with email and/or telephone contact information. If you don’t have the ability to make the recordings on your own, the Earlville Opera House may be able to refer you to local musicians who have the appropriate equipment.
Music submitted for consideration must be original and have been created by the submitting songwriter. No covers!
Members of the Earlville Opera House Program Committee will first judge submissions. The judges recognize that not all styles of music can be measured with the same yardstick. Nevertheless, the judges will be considering the timeless elements of what makes a good song: conveyance of emotion or an idea; melody; phrasing; word craft; and the ability stand out in a world full of bland, copycat music.
All styles of music are acceptable provided that the music can be presented within the logistical constraints of the Palace Theater and can be appreciated at sound pressure levels under 100 dB.
Since the event is about live performance, the judges must be convinced that the submitter’s live performance will be a worthwhile experience. Songwriters are allowed to have others perform their compositions, but the submitted CD must be performed by those who will perform at the Palace if selected.
Selected songs may be performed by a single person or by an ensemble.
Successful submitters will be notified at least one week prior to the Showcase. Those selected should be able to supply lyrics and bios for printed program.
