“The Pirates of Penzance”
Rob Kolb directs this Gilbert & Sullivan favorite! There's a reason The Pirates of Penzance has been performed virtually non-stop since 1879: it's so much darned fun. Let's face it, no matter how serious-minded we like to present ourselves as being, we can't help but giggle at a clever spoof....
Our story starts out on the rocky seashore of the coast of Cornwall where the pirates of Penzance are holding a sherry party to celebrate the apprentice Frederic's promotion to the status of full-blown pirate. As the story unfolds we learn that Frederic was as a child apprenticed to a band of tenderhearted, orphaned pirates by his nurse who, being hard of hearing, had mistaken her master's instructions to apprentice the boy to a pilot.
Frederic, upon completing his 21st year, rejoices that he has fulfilled his indentures and is now free to return to respectable society. But it turns out that he was born on February 29 in leap year, and he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday. By the end of the opera, the pirates, a Major General who knows nothing of military strategy, his large family of beautiful but unwed daughters, as well as a force of timid constabulary all contribute to a one of the most popular and enduring works of musical theatre.
Professor of Music, G. Roberts Kolb has been a member of the Hamilton College faculty since 1981. Kolb is director of choral activities at Hamilton and is conductor of the Hamilton College and Community Oratorio Society.
