Mixed media on wood 2009

It is always challenging when I am asked to write a brief statement to describe my work. I have always believed that the artwork should make the statement, and that all too often artists try to "talk" their work into existence. For me, it is important that the viewers write their own story for each work. Although loaded with my own personal symbolism, I am most interested in having the viewer craft the tale, shaped by their own emotions and experiences. I think of the scenes and characters in my work as templates or sets for a play in which the viewer is asked to write the script. It always amazes me that people can look at the same work and have completely different stories and feelings.

My works are as much about process as story. I simply love paint, and the incredible feeling of creating. Often my works begin as experiments or daydreams that seem to "emerge" to clarity from very abstract beginnings. I often feel like an archeologist “unearthing” something long buried. Rarely do I start with a preconceived image, and approach painting as a type of therapy…something I don’t choose to do, but “must” do.

Please feel free to contact me directly for any more information about my work.
