Arjan Zazueta
August 7 – September 18, 2010
East Gallery

Tether, Hand-embroidered paper towels and pen,  2009,  12” x 12”

Artist Statement:

My work is a hybrid, influenced by design, Minimalism, the history of abstract painting, Aztec imagery, Native handwork and Mexican-American culture. I transform everyday materials such as cardboard, string, paper towels and house paint into colorful abstractions. Because these materials have little perceived value, there is freedom to imbed culturally specific references within the work. As a Mexican-American artist I’m interested in the freedoms and limitations imposed on artists of color. In my work, I mix cultural signifiers with abstraction and popular culture to create new work that can be seen as either pure abstraction or identity-based art or both.
